Eminent Domain Amendment Moved Out of Rules Committee, sent to Judiciary II

(5/17/07) - We have good news to report: House Bill 878 (the eminent domain amendment) was moved from the Rules committee to the Judiciary II Committee on May 15. The J-II Committee is chaired by Rep. Dan Blue (D-Wake), one of the primary sponsors of HB 878.

Please visit our blog for updates on the bill's status.

History of HB 878 (Eminent Domain Amendment)

On March 15, a bipartisan bill to protect our private property from unjust seizure by governments, was introduced in the N.C. House.  This bill would give North Carolinians the opportunity to vote on an amendment to the state constitution that would prohibit governmental entities from using eminent domain to seize private property for economic development purposes.  Unlike a legislative solution that can easily be undone by the whims of a future legislature, a constitutional amendment will give us protection that stands the test of time.

Four days after it was introduced, HB 878 was referred to the Committee on Rules, Calendar, and Operations of the House.  It remained in that committee for two months.  On May 15, HB 878 was referred to the Judicary II Committee.
